C-marking and classification of drones
The European regulations require new drones on the market to be marked with a C-classification from 2024. The marking is evidence that the drone satisfies certain requirements. It is the producer that applies this marking.
In the open category, you can fly drones marked from C0 to C4.
- C0 drones will weigh less than 250 grams and are flown in subcategory A1.
- C1 drones are less than 900 grams and are flown in subcategory A1.
- C2 drones are less than 4 kg and are flown in subcategories A2 or A3.
- C3 and C4 drones are less than 25 kg and are flown in subcategory A3.
The marking will look like this:
After 31. December 2023, all drones between 250 grams and 25 kg, with no C-class label, will have to fly in subcategory A3.
Does your drone not have this marking? In that case, it is considered a "legacy"-class drone. All "legacy" drones that weigh between 250 grams and 25 kg must be operated in subcategory A3 from the year 2024. Drones that weigh less than 250 grams may still be operated in subcategory A1.
The regulations allow for "legacy" drones to be given C-marking, but this must be applied by the producer.
